Over the last few years we have seen that the future of Greek wines lies in the amazing array of indigenous varieties and the stunningly different wines that they can produce, either on their own or in a blend. We therefore took the financially difficult decision to uproot almost half of our total vineyards that had Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and plant the local red variety Mavrodaphne instead.
Mavrodaphne on Kefalonia is a rare cousin of the better known Mavrodaphne of Patras which is made into a sweet wine. On Kefalonia, however, this grape is invariably fermented into a powerful, dry wine with characteristic aromas of sour cherry and mint.
The new vineyards were planted in spring 2008 after two years of allowing the fields to regenerate their nutrients, and show our first small vintage in 2011.
Gentilini has started purchasing plots of land within the Robola VQPRD zone to begin planting vineyards of our own. Two vineyards totaling one hectare are in the process of being cultivated.
Our Experimental Wines
In order to stay on the forefront of Greek wine production, and to avoid stagnation we constantly experiment with new wines and wine-making methods. Often these wines turn out superb, and these become our special reserve wines that we sell only to very select shops and restaurants or directly at the winery.
The last two years have seen the creation of our Limited-Release Syrah, the Cellar Select Robola and Eclipse. Syrah and Eclipse are not blends and spend 18 months in very special Ermitage barrels from France. Only two barrels are made a year, giving a total production of 595 bottles for each wine. The Robola grapes come from a single vineyard at an altitude of 800meters above sea level. The vineyard was planted in 1956 and is one of the oldest vineyards on the island. Only 3,000 bottles are produced.
